Are crappie the same as perch?

No the crappie and a perch are not the same, but they are in the same panfish group. Some people call the crappie a black crappie a speckled perch. It all depends where in the country you go. In all honesty, a crappie is not a perch, but do taste similar to some. If you had to fish for a perch, bluegill or crappie, many would tell you to fish for a perch, however a crappie is just as tasty. I have heard of many anglers both beginners and enthusiast will catch a perch and a crappie and prepare both for dinner and no one knows the difference. I know of one person that does not fish and will only eat perch. If you give her a crappie, she will no the difference and she will let you know about it. I guess that everyone taste differently. I like the taste of crappie and have been known to eat a Friday night perch dinner when out with family and friends. Crappies have a different look and are not considered a perch, but a relative in the panfish category. If you do hear someone who has caught a speckled perch, it is more than likely a crappie. Either way, you are going to have a good tasting fish. The crappie is larger than the perch and has more meat on one fish. That is if you catch a nice sized one for dinner. You will enjoy the taste especially if you use a breading or batter.
