Crappie Spring?

During the spawn the male crappie is responsible for building and protecting the nest. This means that he will be active in eating anything that might look like a threat. So use a bait or jig that will move around the shelter that you are targeting. I find something that has lots of contrast to the background works well and regardless of the water conditions I have had luck with silvers, white and yellows that are broken up with darker spots or stripes.

Now think about the other small fry in the area that will be feeding on vegetation and looking for the fresh eggs that the male crappie will especially be guarding against. These will be sure targets for the crappie not just as a potential threat but also a good meal while he hangs around the house. Because crappie will be breeding in the shallow areas there are lots of other bait and predators that might be there to munch on the eggs and the soon to come young crappie fry. While the crappie may not be able to do much to defend against large predators it can certainly eat the insects and other larvae seeking an easy meal.

Many anglers consider the spring time to be the best time for crappie for many reasons. First is that this is when the fish are most active and often times the meat is considered to be the best at this time but also it is perhaps the easiest to catch them at this time. The phrase that they are jumping in the boat most likely gets it origin from this time of year. And if you question the idea that they bite on a bare hook that only means that you are using the wrong hook.
