Kentucky Lake Crappie Fishing Tips

Many fishermen report great success in Kentucky Lake by moving from brush pile to brush pile and casting a couple of times off of each one. If you need to fish in deeper waters (like 15 to 20 feet) you will probably want to use jigs. Some crappie fishermen experience great results from brightly colored lures that are easy for the crappie to see. The deeper the crappie are in the water, the harder time they will have seeing your bait and live baits may not bring you much success.

How to Fish Crappie at Kentucky Lake

So now you know where all the great fish are hiding but do you know what tactics are needed to land that crappie? Fishing crappie in Kentucky Lake on a good day takes little more effort than simply casting your line and hook into the water. The trick is the find the right spot and the bait they feel like eating that day. Here are some tips to help with that:

  • Bring along different baits so you can experiment with a couple of different ones until you get one that they seem to like.
  • Try different depths with your hook until you get results. Once you find the “hot spot” most crappie will remain in that spot for some time.
  • If they stop biting in one area, try moving just a few feet away and try again.
  • Move your bait slowly over a brush pile or other area known to have crappie. Moving too quickly may prevent you from getting a bite.
  • Try fly jigs for crappie fishing, particularly when fishing in deeper waters.
  • Remember that when it comes to crappie, often less is more. You can see great results from the simplest of tactics.
  • If fishing with jigs, be sure to use a loop knot for the best results.
  • Be sure to use something on your line to help you keep up with how deep you are fishing. This way when you find a great spot, you won’t lose it.
  • When vertical fishing, always keep the same depth.
  • Don’t be afraid to try a new tactic or new bait that you have heard works in the area. Flexibility is vital to success.

Additionally, if you want to have the maximum chance at catching your limit of crappie, consider hiring a guide to help you get the most from your Kentucky Lake fishing experience.
