The minnow has a very important job to fulfill for several reasons. Not only are they the favorite food for numerous fish species but they are the irreplaceable link that is found between the plant and animal life. They actually help to convert certain types of algae into the proteins that larger game fish consume.

What Types of Fish Eat Minnows?

Minnows can be found in all types of water such as lakes, rivers, ponds and streams all over the nation. They are a vital food source for many species of fish. In fact, so many different types of fish eat minnows that it would be impossible to list them all. It would be easier to make a list of the fish that don’t consume minnows. Basically, any type of fish that is larger than the minnow will feed off of it. Now only are they food for other fish but many birds eat minnows as well. They truly are one of the most important food sources around.

If you’ve ever done any fishing at all, then you probably already know that minnows make excellent bait. In fact, they are so popular that many dedicated anglers raise their own by setting up a fish tank and adjusting it to suit the needs of the minnows. Using live plants will give the minnows a place to lay eggs and a place for the babies to hide out while they grow.

Many anglers don’t have the time or a place to raise minnows so they prefer to use traps to catch them when they’re ready to go fishing. You can buy your traps or make your own and there are many different sizes and shapes to choose from.

Your last option is to visit your local bait and tackle shop and pick some minnows up on your way to your favorite fishing spot or use a net and catch some when you get there. It all depends on what suits you the best personally. You may not have thought too much about minnows in the past but now you know they are a very important species that plays a vital role in nature and you may never look at them in the same way again.
