How To Fish Crappie Structure For More Hookups

When Crappies are not actively feeding they are in low energy mode.  Cold blooded creatures constantly cycle between periods of high energy and low energy.  When a Crappie is at low energy it wills till feed, but it will look for less meals of greater size that are easy to catch without expending much of their diminished energy level.

When fishing structure be sure to fish it thoroughly in terms of area.  Certainly you should try the entire perimeter of a structure before you declare it to not hold fish.  Try the north, south, east and west ends of an area thoroughly.  If you can it is best to slowly and quietly move right into the middle of a structure for the best results.  Some of my best Crappie outings have been when I found a large amount of standing timber closely bunched together.  By steering a small boat in the middle of this collection of trees you can often yield a huge harvest of trophy sized Crappies.

My final advice is to keep your approach to these fish as quiet as possible.  Crappies are very prone to be spooked.  You should arrive at your preferred area either with the use of a quiet electric trolling motor or better yet by letting the boat drift into position.  Once in position you should refrain from unnecessary noise.  Any banging on the bottom of the boat is the worst thing you can do.  Be careful when putting down tackle boxes and even walking on the boat.

Do not disrupt any of the cover you are fishing when you get hung up.  Treat the expedition much like a hunter would and stay quiet.
