Perch Fishing Tips

Perch will use the light from the sun to help them locate their food easier. For this reason, if you fish at night, it’s suggested that you use lanterns to light the water, fish under pier lights or go where there is a full moon producing plenty of light on the water where you’re fishing.

There are many factors that will determine how the perch respond on any given occasion. For example, the weather greatly affects how the perch respond to your offerings. It’s difficult to cast your line or tell when the perch strikes in windy weather and when it’s raining they have a tendency of paying more attention to the rain drops hitting the water than your bait.

Try to be flexible when perch fishing because it often requires you to change your technique to match the surroundings if you want to get the best results.

Look for this species around vegetation, structures and drop-offs. When presented with the right bait the perch will produce a heavy strike or if you catch them during a time when they’re hungry. This is something that you need to be aware of. Be careful when sitting the hook for perch because they have a thin mouth. It’s recommended that you use a quick jerk to set the hook then relax the line for a second before reeling them in. Make sure you don’t jerk too hard or the hook will come right through the mouth.

Before you set out on your next perch fishing trip, take a few minutes to make sure you have all of your equipment in order and ready to go. There’s nothing worse than getting out on the water and realizing that you don’t have everything you need. Carry along a variety of tackle and lures even if you plan to fish with live bait. This way, if you run out of bait, you can simply switch to lures instead of calling it a day and going home early.

It’s also a good idea to check the local fishing reports to see what kind of luck other anglers are having. This will give you an idea of where the most perch have been caught recently and which baits they’re responding to the best.

Checking the weather conditions would also be a good idea before heading out since this will have an impact on how the fish respond. It’s also important to make sure the weather is suitable for fishing.
