Tips for Crappie Fishing on Reelfoot Lake

So what are the top five crappie fishing tips you should know:
Know your location
Know your bait
Find your technique
Know the weather/season
Be Gentle

You can then apply each of these five tips to fishing at Reelfoot Lake. Your location will be very important. If it’s your first time on the lake, you will want to take the right tools with you so you find your way around. It’s also helpful to look up Reelfoot Lake fishing reports to help you before your first trip. In fact, taking fishing reports along is helpful every time you go.

You also need to know your bait. Have the right bait for your time of year and season and also be sure to bring along back up bait options since crappie can sometimes be unpredictable and might decide they don’t like one type that you have brought. You don’t want to be stuck out of the lake with only one bait choice and find out the crappie aren’t biting it today.

Be aware of your technique but be flexible in the sense that you might have to change your technique from time to time to get the most from your crappie fishing experience.

Next, you need to know the weather and the season. Lake conditions can change depending on the time of year you visit the Reelfoot and this will affect how the crappie behave.

Lastly, remember to fish gently. Too much action or acting too quickly can spook the crappie away. Slow down, be patient and be gentle. They’re called “papermouths” for a reason.

Here are some additional tips:

Experiment with different bait- no matter what you have heard or been told, if one bait doesn’t seem to be working for you, don’t be afraid to try another.

Take different poles and rods with you so you can find the best one to work for you. You may need to practice with different depths before you get the best spot for fishing.

Try fishing for crappie using trolling- especially in the pre-spawn periods.

When trolling or fishing in deeper waters for crappie from your boat, try live minnows as your bait of choice. Most crappie go crazy for some live dinner dangling right before them

In other parts of the year, you may enjoy using jigs or spoons to jig down to the crappie.

Light spinning or spin casting gear is another crappie fishing option to consider.

Keep all of this in mind as you fish for crappie on Reelfoot Lake and you will have a great experience each and every time you go.
