How to Filet a Crappie

1.      With the fish completely intact insert the knife at a 90 degree angle just between the head and body. Cut down until you feel backbone. Be careful not to completely cut through the fish as their bones are very fragile and you can easily remove the entire head.
2.      Once you’ve reached the backbone turn the knife to a 35 degree angle and run it along the inside of the backbone. Keep it as close to the backbone as possible to get as much meat as you can.
3.      Run the blade down to the fin and stop just before you reach it. Now flip what you’ve just cut over, not the fish the cut.
4.      Now simply start the knife between the meat and the skin and run it up towards the end.
5.      Take the filet out and clean out the ribcage and any unwanted parts that were left behind.
6.      Repeat the steps mentioned above for the rest of the fish.

You have now successfully completed the advanced technique for filleting crappie. This technique is great when you need to clean multiple fish quickly.
This will save you a lot of time and headache because it makes it easier. You’ll also find that the more you do it the more meat you’ll get from the filet.
