It’s also important to remember not to pull on your line at the first sign of a nibble. Be gentler with the line or you might scare the fish off. Springtime is considered one of the easiest times to fish for crappie because they are spawning. You can usually find crappie in more shallow areas, near edges and in brush and vegetation.

Be Gentle

Lastly it is important to know that crappie are very delicate fish and it’s important to fish for them gently. If you plan on putting the fish back when they’re caught, be sure to place them in the water gently and wait for them to be able to swim away on their own. If you just throw a crappie back in the water, they will usually die just a few moments later. Keep this same sensitivity in mind when fishing for crappie.

Set the hook very gently. If you pull too hard, you will lose your fish (and most likely tear off his mouth and kill him). You may see your lost catch floating on top of the waters a little bit later.
